Ingredients

For Filling
1/2 Cup Cleaned Dried Prawns
2 table-spoon Coconut oil
1 medium Onion About 1 cup chopped
1 medium Tomato About 3/4 cup chopped
4 big cloves Garlic
1 or 2 Green chilli
1/4 tea-spoon Turmeric Powder
1 to 1 1/2 tea-spoon Red chilli powder
1/2 Cup Shredded coconut more to dust/roll the rice balls
1 or 2 springs Curry leaves
to taste Salt
For Dough
3/4 cup Rice Flour
to taste Salt
Enough to knead the dough Hot water

For making filling

 

  1. Heat oil in a pan and add chopped garlic and saute untill it is light brown.
  2. Then add chopped onion untill it is soft and light brown.
  3. After that add chopped Tomato and green chilli and saute untill tomato become soft and combine well with onion.
  4. Now add turmeric, chilli powder, mix well untill oil clears (make sure not to burn it, keep the flame low). If the mix is too dry, you can add few drops of water.
  5. Then add Coconut and curry leaves and mix well
  6. Now add cleaned dried prawns and add little water, close the lid and cook for 5 to 6 minutes. By this time water has to evaporate completely.
  7. Now add enough salt (We didn’t add salt at the beginning because, dried prawns already has salt in it, so at the end add the salt as per taste).
  8. Now keep this mixture aside.

For making dough and stuffing

 

  1. Mix rice flour with enough salt.
  2. Then add water little by little and make smooth dough by kneading with hands.
  3. Switch on the steamer on gas stove and line it with banana leaves/foil paper/parchment paper and apply little oil on it.
  4. Apply little oil in your hands. Take lemon sized dough and flatten it in your palm (Ref Picture)
  5. Now put some filling at the centre of the flattened dough and close it and make ball shape. (Ref Picture)
  6. Take extra coconut in a plate and roll the rice balls with it.
  7. Keep the coconut covered rice balls on prepared steamer.
  8. Continue with the rest of the dough and filling.
  9. Steam for 15 to 20 minutes on medium flame.
  10. Make sure there is enough water in the steamer, if water ran out, it will get burned smell.
  11. Now enjoy with hot cup of cardamom flavored tea 🙂

Tips & Tricks

  • You can use fresh prawns instead of dried one. If you are using fresh one, just marinate it with little red chilli, turmeric and salt for some time. Then add it at the same time we added the dried prawns in this recipe. Or you can Shallow fry it first using little oil in a separate pan, and add them to the onion coconut mixture and avoid cooking part. Just add the fried prawns after adding the coconut and simmer for 1 minutes.
  • You can use fresh or dried coconut. Fresh one gives intense flavor and taste. But I used dried coconut here.
  • Coconut oil gives authentic Kerala flavor, but you can use any oil that is available.
